After hearing this sad cry from Sita, Jatayu came and blocked Ravana’s way, and spoke to him thus.

 

Alas! Alas! Husband, my lord, save me, save me

O Lakshmana, my boy, save me from my woes

I was deceived by a demon

Oh! please protect me

 

O jewel of a woman, to stay here

is not easy for me, it’s getting late

Great hero Ravana, who makes his foes shiver,

the lord of the world, haven’t you heard?

 

I am that Ravana, O pretty lady,

come here to take you away

 

O revered saint, every day in my mind

I bow before your compassionate feet

 

Please know that I am the wife of Rama,

the son of the famous King Dasaratha

 

A demon came here as a golden deer

I took a great fancy to it

my husband has gone to catch it

he will kill the demon and return soon

 

Slokam:

Lakshmana spoke thus and left. Ravana, disguised as an ascetic, came and spoke to the golden-complexioned Sita.

What a shame O Devi, in this forest

you talk to me in this manner

you are as cruel as Kaikeyi

now may Mother Earth protect you

 

I am going to Rama now, I am leaving

If they kill my husband,

do you imagine you can

live with me forever?

I will end my life in that case

 

Alas! please do not talk like this

I am not in the slightest deceitful

It’s the cruel demons who are killed

do not be swayed by their magic
