My dear friend, the promise I had made to your dear wife

I hereby reiterate with my father the God of Sun as witness

I renounce my mother for your sake

And also my five brothers, I swear

From now on I will not live on this planet

Along with Arjuna, I promise

O Duryodhana, I will be ahead of you

in martyrdom. It’s the truth, the truth, the truth

This is Karna’s vow, Karna’s vow, Karna’s vow!

O God! To leave you Duryodhana, your bidding?

Is Karna ungrateful? Certainly that’s what you mean

This moment I must punish you but my love forbids me

I am suffering the repercussions of a great misdeed

Death is my refuge; cut off my neck with the sword

I heard the whole story, O son of Pridha, my friend

If it has calmed your agitated mind

And even if I am grief-stricken by the turn of events

If you think it’s a sin to fight your brothers

I hereby grant you leave to desert me

Till death my boundless love for you

Won’t diminish, I swear by God

Oh Crown of humanity! This woman is proud of you, my lord

A prime example of enduring friendship! 

Karna is the only being on earth equal to you

That icon of love won’t find it too ardous to

drink poison, chop his neck or jump into fire for our sake.

For the strong words that traitor Dushasana uttered

Let’s hope God will forgive him, my gallant hero!

Wicked! Wicked! Stop these harsh words

You brute! Your wicked deeds are most painful

The insolence towards your elder brother is shocking

Karna and I are two bodies with one soul

Understand that one half won’t betray the other, you fool.

You scoundrel, if you slander Karna again

I will slash your neck without the slightest regret

My brother, hear clearly this younger brother’s words

Is there any kinship as strong as blood ties? 

It is now very clear Karna is deceitful

We must kill Karna the snake before he bites your

hand that fed him milk and nourished him

I will kill the traitor in secrecy at night 

Please give me permission to do that

It’s well-known I do not spurn those who seek my help

I will make a promise; take that and you may leave

Except Arjuna, the son of Indra, 

none of my other four brothers will I slay

And that is a promise.

Alas! my mind, my eldest son, 

is burning with great grief

I cannot bear this, you are my only solace

Will you send me back empty-handed?

Say no further; even if great men dither

And the steadfast Himalayas start moving

Even if the sky comes crashing down

And the oceans start drying up

My friend I will not desert

under any circumstance.

O Karna! Enough of these harsh words

With full mercy hear me, compassionate king  

In self-deceit I committed the sin

Forgive me my son; come with me eldest Pandava
