Lord Siva

Sloka:

Arjuna, prior to starting his penance to Lord Siva, visits sacred waters, crosses forests, towns and mountains, prays at holy shrines and reaches the banks of River Ganga near Kailas mountains, stands on one foot, focuses his mind on Lord Siva and starts praying.

Lord Siva, please protect me always

English

Sloka:

The innocent Pandavas, after they were cheated in a game of dice, were banished into the forest for 12 years. Arjuna, after taking leave of his beloved wife, set out in the northerly direction while chanting prayers to Lord Siva.

Lord Siva, please protect me always

O Destroyer of Cupid! O Lord!!

Please be merciful and wipe off

the misery caused by our enemies

O God who is revered by all on earth

Dear Keshava, who always

English

Sloka:

After slaying the suicide-squads called Samsapthakas , the Arjuna who returned happily in his chariot driven by Lord Krishna, suddenly started feeling uneasy for unknown reasons. He then asks  Lord Krishna thus

Dear Keshava, who always has compassion to devotees, my mind is restless and worried for no reason.

My left eye-brow is twitching incessantly (a bad omen according to Indian belief), my voice is shattering, I am losing my courage.  (I am seeing bad omens)

Oh! The most charming of all maidens

English
Sloka:-
Each step she takes gets the swan in hand’s reach
Each step she takes gently, walking without stretch
Each step Damayanti and the swan took, the farther they went
From her friends, seeing this, the swan said thus in amusement.

Oh! The most charming of all maidens!
What are your intentions?
How are you planning to catch me?
I can fly off to the sky easily.

Youth has blossomed on you, yet you behave like a child

Oh! Shiva, what am I to do, my god?

English
Sloka:
The king approached the swan stealthily,
While it lay in slumber motionlessly
Befriending the bird the king’s only intention,
But when woken, it wailed in commotion.

Oh! Shiva, what am I to do, my god?
I am being killed in deceit by this land’s lord.
My family is going to be orphaned.

My father away in death,
Lonely he left me on earth,
My mother’s heart will burn like a hearth,
My child is soon to take birth

Please see, O King of demons

English
Please see, O King of demons,
O Ravana, this is Bali.

The long and thick tail, the hands,
feet and face may instil fear

But don’t pay heed to that
it may run away if it sees us

There is a way, sneak from the rear,
catch with your hand, watch its misery

Go ahead slowly and stealthily
